<![CDATA[Smart Inventory Planning & Optimization]]>Fri, 16 Feb 2018 15:18:01 GMThttps://supplysquare.be/blog/smart-inventory-planning-optimization

<![CDATA[Intermittent Demand and Spare Parts: Why Forecasting Doesn't Work ... and What to Do About It]]>Sun, 04 Feb 2018 11:25:44 GMThttps://supplysquare.be/blog/intermittent-demand-and-spare-parts-why-forecasting-doesnt-work-and-what-to-do-about-it
How do you plan the right inventory levels when you have intermittent demand, the seemingly random, highly sporadic usage pattern that is especially prevalent with spare parts? If you are like most spare parts planning organizations, then you typically rely on traditional forecasting approaches, rule of thumb methods, and "planned" maintenance schedules to determine stocking requirements. Our webinar will discuss these approaches, why they often fail, and how new probabilistic forecasting methods can make a big difference to your bottom line.
Please join us for a free webinar on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7:00 - 8:00 PM CET.
By attending the webinar you will learn:
  1. What is intermittent demand and why is it so hard to forecast;
  2. Why traditional forecasting methods and rule of thumb approaches fail;
  3. What is Probabilistic Modeling and how does it improve Spare Parts planning.
Register February 27, 2018 - 7:00 - 8:00 PM CET

Our session will be presented by three industry leaders in spare parts planning and management:
  • Phillip Slater, spare parts management consultant, author, and founder of SparePartsKnowHow.com will introduce and moderate our session.
  • Thomas Willemain, Ph.D., co-founder and SVP Research for Smart Software, will lead off with an executive view of probabilistic forecasting, the challenge of intermittent demand planning, and describe an effective inventory planning framework.
  • Greg Hartunian, President and CEO of Smart Software, will provide real life examples of classic planning approaches and their pitfalls, and then demonstrate an alternative, service level-driven methodology to manage risk and find the optimal balance between inventory investment and availability.
    We hope you will be able to join us and we will be recording our session. All registrants will automatically receive a link to the replay. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

We hope you will be able to join us.

"Don't stock too much and don't run out." This directive is issued by many CEOs - a crisp and clear message that seems impossible to accomplish. How much is enough? What will demand be for each of our thousands of products? How wrong will our forecast be, and how important is it that we don't run out? How do we formulate the plan and make it so? This is largely the point of your Inventory Planning process but how well is it working for you?

Probability forecasting and scenario analysis are quickly becoming the approaches of choice for optimizing inventory levels. By leveraging these predictive modeling techniques you can discover and understand trade-offs between service levels and inventory investments. This will help you develop a consensus inventory plan that is continuously updated to reflect real time changes in demand, supply, and business priorities.

The Right Forecast Accuracy Metric for Inventory Planning
by Thomas Willemain Nov 10, 2017

Traditional forecasting accuracy metrics aren't applicable when the goal is to optimize inventory. It's "service level accuracy" that matters because just setting a service target doesn't mean you'll actually achieve it. Poor accuracy here has extremely costly implications. The right way to measure accuracy for inventory planning is to ....

How to Choose a Target Service Level
by
Thomas Willemain  Oct 31, 2017

When setting a target service level, make sure to take into account factors like current service levels, replenishment lead times, cost constraints, the pain inflicted by shortages on you and your customers, and your competitive position.

5 Demand Planning Tips for Calculating
Forecast Uncertainty

Those who produce forecasts owe it to those who consume forecasts, and to themselves, to be aware of the uncertainty in their forecasts. This note is about how to estimate forecast uncertainty and use the estimates in your demand planning process. We focus on forecasts made in support of demand planning as well as forecasts inherent in optimizing inventory policies involving reorder points, safety stocks, and min/max levels.
